Sub-millimeter Voxel Diffusion Tensor Imaging of the Optic Chiasm

چکیده
Introduction: Diffusion tensor MRI (DTI) has become a powerful tool for the investigation into tissue architecture and integrity. However, there are numerous anatomical details in the brain that are undetectable at typical DTI image resolution, being 8mm3 voxels, due to partial volume effects and the sequence used in the majority of DTI studies, single -shot EPI, is sensitive to magnetic field inhomogeneity near air/tissue interfaces. Recently, we developed a radial fast spin-echo (FSE) sequence for high-resolution DTI of in vivo brain that allows sub-millimeter isotropic voxels to be acquired in areas of magnetic field inhomogeneity [1], like the optic nerve/chiasm.

In vivo diffusion tensor imaging of the human optic chiasm at sub-millimeter resolution
In this work we report findings from an in vivo diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) study of the human optic chiasm at sub-millimeter voxel resolution. Data were collected at 3 T using a diffusion-weighted radial-FSE sequence, which provides images free from typical magnetic susceptibility artifacts. The general DTI features observed in the optic chiasm region were consistent across subjects. They i...

Introduction There are numerous anatomical details in the brain that are undetectable at image resolutions typically used in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), being 8mm voxels, due to partial volume effects with surrounding tissue. In addition, the sequence used in the majority of DTI studies, single-shot EPI, is sensitive to magnetic field inhomogeneity near air/tissue interfaces. Because of the...
متن کاملMicro-architectural Features of the In Vivo Human Optic Chiasm
Introduction In this work, the micro-architecture of the optic nerves/chiasm/tracts were studied, in vivo, with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) at submillimeter resolution. The optic chiasm is an interesting structure to study with DTI as it has intricate white matter architecture and could provide clinicaly relevant information in a number of conditions, such as optic pathway gliomas, pituitary...
متن کاملHigh-resolution diffusion tensor imaging and tractography of the human optic chiasm at 9.4 T
The optic chiasm with its complex fiber micro-structure is a challenge for diffusion tensor models and tractography methods. Likewise, it is an ideal candidate for evaluation of diffusion tensor imaging tractography approaches in resolving inter-regional connectivity because the macroscopic connectivity of the optic chiasm is well known. Here, high-resolution (156 microm in-plane) diffusion ten...
متن کاملDiffusion spectrum magnetic resonance imaging (DSI) tractography of crossing fibers
MRI tractography is the mapping of neural fiber pathways based on diffusion MRI of tissue diffusion anisotropy. Tractography based on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) cannot directly image multiple fiber orientations within a single voxel. To address this limitation, diffusion spectrum MRI (DSI) and related methods were developed to image complex distributions of intravoxel fiber orientation. Her...
